Video Card Reviews

What to look for when deciding which video card is required for your computer gaming and media needs.

Video cards have indeed come a long way since their creation in the 1980’s when they started with an output of one simple color, but without a video card, you wouldn’t see anything on your computer screen.

Video cards today are available for quite reasonable prices because there is such a high demand for computer games, high definition media and much more. Computers have built in video cards that do perform well enough for an average user, but for computer games an extra video card allows the computers central processors to function properly, while the separate video card concentrates on powering large sized graphics software.

When thinking about price ranges, it’s safe to say you won’t want to spend under $80 for a good quality video card. For example, a cheaper video card won’t have an efficient cooling facility for built in devices. Another thing to watch for are the memory capabilities, if there isn’t adequate RAM installed on the video card itself, it can filch memory from the main computer system, with low graphics results and improper computer functioning. You don’t have to reach very high on the price ladder for a good enough media video card, but you would expect to pay top price for higher end PC games.

Another aspect to consider when purchasing the correct video card is that it needs to have the correct connectors for your PC, or the right slots to fit into on the motherboard. Most video cards fit into a PCI-E slot on contemporary motherboards. Modern video cards have their own cooling fan, but keep in mind that a secondary video card demands a lot of power, so you need to make sure there is ample memory on the video card itself.

How much memory you want to look for a video card to have would start around 768MB. If you get up to around 1GB of memory the bandwidth becomes affected by how well the video card transfers data, thereby restricting the actual memory that gets used. You probably don’t want to go with a video card with under 256MB of memory installed.

A video card will show a clock speed which tells you how quickly the video card can process data between the RAM and the visual output on your computer screen. The graphics processing unit or GPU increases graphics, which is imperative to 3D image replication. A good clock speed can vary on video card devices from 250 to 850 MHz.

It is important that the video card has cooling capabilities, efficient RAM and the right connections, because video cards require the most power of all the devices in your computer. Remember to get the right connections systems such as VGA, DVI, VIVO and HDMI, unless you interface the video card with the motherboard. Combining this knowledge with the correct amount of memory will ensure the best possible output your video card can provide. With proper research into cost and function you can obtain the best video card to suit your visual needs.
