Radar Detector Reviews

Finding the right radar detector can be a nightmare. Save yourself the time and trouble of digging through reviews with this timesaving guide.

A radar detector is an invaluable tool for the modern day road warrior. Radar detectors implement a variety of technologies, which offer increased accuracy. There is a variety of radar detectors on the market; the features in which you receive depend on whether the unit is an entry level, mid-range, or high-end model. Before purchasing radar detectors, you should consider features such as the range, sensitivity, false alert filtering, display, mode detection, alert types, and mounting mechanisms.

Radar detectors utilize a variety of technologies to ensure accurate results. The four most common bands (frequencies) include the X, K, Ka, and Ku. The K band is one of the most common bands and works off of the 24.05 to 24.25 Ghz frequencies. K band radar detectors use a clocking range of 0.25 mi and a detection range of 0.25 to 2.0 miles. The Ka band is used primarily by the police and combines the K band with an automated camera. There are many variations in the Ka band; thus, it is licensed for any frequency between 33.4 and 36.0 Ghz. The Ku band is not common in the United States and is used for satellite and aerospace communications. The X-band operates off of the 10.5 to 10.55 Ghz frequencies and is the oldest detection system used by the police. X-band frequencies can be detected from 2 to 4 miles. Unfortunately, it can only detect speeds that are 0.5 miles or closer.

The range and sensitivity are the most notable features to consider when purchasing radar detectors. A high range can provide additional time to slow down after hearing an alert. Radar detectors can pickup false alarms, which are caused by automatic doors and emergency response vehicles. Most detectors offer a variety of filtering modes for different scenarios. Ensure that the display can be seen and heard from the driver’s seat. Some displays utilize a series of dots to convey the information while other devices use ordinary text. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method as it is a matter of personal preference.

Radar detectors provide helpful information while traveling, however, to avoid distraction they must be easy to use. Ensure that the display is bright enough and that the alerts can be heard over the radio. The two most common alert systems are voice and beeping. Voice alerts are easier to understand and can be processed faster than beeping alerts. Beeping alerts offer increased accuracy but require a steep learning curve. For beeping devices, a certain tone or sound is associated with an alert. Newer devices offer POP detection, which is the latest technology being used by the police.

Lastly, consider how and where the radar detector is mounted on the vehicle. The solution required would change depending on the intended use, and whether the radar detector will be used in more than one car. You should mount radar detectors in an easy to read location that provides accurate results. Choosing the right radar detector is not rocket science but it is essential to purchase a device that fits your personal and professional needs. A radar detector, if used responsibly, can save time and money while reducing travel times.
