A Guide for purchasing Home Theater Systems
Common sense advice for novice Home Theater System buyers.
The amazing world of technology has brought the movie experience in to the home. Home theater systems range from the simple to the mind boggling and choosing one that would be right for you can be difficult and frustrating. In shopping for a home theater system keep one thing in mind. Spend the time to research the products that are out there. Spending a little time doing this can reduce headaches when you go to the store. The sales people at your local electronics store can be helpful, but remember, they are there to take your money so try and have an idea of what you are looking for before you go.
Products range from the simple 2.1 audio to complete 5.1 digital surround sound. I find that the average person makes the mistake of overpowering their system. Be wary of this and take into account the size of the room and how useful the bells and whistles are to you. Most average size rooms will do just fine with 2.1 audio which includes a left and right speaker with a sub-woofer. These products, even at the low end, can provide depth of sound without wires running all over your house. While clarity of sound is sometimes an issue with the 2.1 systems, most people aren’t even aware of the distortions that occur. If you are a techno-geek then the 2.1 systems will probably not satisfy you. In this instance I recommend 5.1 digital audio. This provides, in most cases, five satellite speakers and a sub-woofer. Many of these systems can be directly connected to your home PC and your television for maximum advantage. With your speakers properly arranged and your equalizer tuned you will enjoy the full range of sounds provided with the recording. A word of warning to all home theater buyers. If your room is not the proper size for a 5.1 home theater system you will in effect be wasting your money. There is an optimal size for truly enjoying these systems and if your room is not big enough the sounds will step over each other and you will be unsatisfied with the results.
Prices are a major factor in all electronics purchases. There are many people out there who would like you to believe that more money equals better quality. The reality is that the difference between the middle grade and high grade products is almost negligible. Quality can change drastically from low grade to mid grade and even then, unless you are a musical genius, the difference is unnoticeable to the untrained ear. In effect sound is not the thing you should be shopping for. Shop for ease of use and set-up. This will save you from getting things you don’t need and from spending money unnecessarily.
Get out there America. Go find your bliss in Home theater systems so you and your family can enjoy your favorite movies and music. Keep your wits about you and you will not get taken for a ride and remember it’s all for entertainments sake.
