Cordless Phone
When looking to purchase a cordless phone, here are a few specific decisions that you should make first.
Over the past 20 years, cordless phones have replaced the traditional plug-into-the-wall phones because of their convenience. The ability to walk around your home (or work) while talking on a cordless phone is, by far, the greatest advantage of these telephones.
Today’s cordless phones come with many different features such as caller id and answering machines built into the phone. When looking to purchase a cordless phone, there are a few specific things that you should decide upon first.
Most importantly, in the past, has been the range of the phone, that is, how far away from the base will it allow you to go. When the first cordless phones came out, you couldn’t travel very far from the base at all. In an apartment, that was one thing. In a house, it’s something else. Now, however, a new standard for communication protocol has been developed called DECT 6.0. DECT is an acronym for Digitial Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications). These phones operate on the 1.9 GHz frequency.
The DECT 6.0 standard provides a fantastic range and crystal-clear sound quality. There is no interference nor static to the reception as there was in times past. Unlike phones in the past, the signal is digitally encrypted for security and no eavesdroppers are going to be able to listen in to your phone call. Cordless phones using this standard are typically more efficient than earlier models by approximately 30% therefore their batteries will last longer.
Keep in mind, though, that these phones are top of the line and tend to be a bit more expensive than their 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz counterparts. Consumer Reposts states that there is no voice quality difference between the 2.4 GHz and the 5.8 GHz however 5.8 GHz frequency cordless phones are less prone to interference from other electronics such as home Wi-Fi networks whether your own or someone else’s.
The next question you want to consider before purchasing a cordless phone is where you will be using it. In an apartment, one cordless phone would be fine. However, in a house, you may want to strategically place extra handsets around, for example, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Also, in the home setting, do you have a reason for a two-line phone or a four-line phone such as teenagers living in the house that need (or want) a separate phone line? Two-line and four-line phones are very popular however, once again, the cost rises with the addition of the lines.
For someone with a hearing impairment, it may be best to consider an amplified phone. These phones boost not only the volume but the tones themselves that many people have difficulty hearing. Cordless phones are also available with large buttons so that the correct numbers are always pressed.
Do you have internet phone services such as Skype or Vonage? These internet phone services rely on your broadband internet communication and not on your standard phone jacks. If you have this type of service, there are cordless phones made specifically for this service. While these phones may be slightly more expensive than your average cordless phone, if you have services similar to these, you will probably want to consider this type of cordless phone.
After deciding what kind of cordless phone you want, now you can go to the store and determine which phone you want. Cordless phones come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes and colors. Once you’ve decided what type of cordless phone you need, this is an easy decision.
