The Low-Down on Diets – What You Need To Know

With one in four adults on a diet 'most of the time', it's hardly surprising that the diet industry grosses over £1 billion every year in the UK. For those people who strive for the body beautiful there are a number of options available, anything from pill-popping to counting calories. But do any of these diets really work and, more importantly, can they keep those pesky pounds off?

Let's start with one of the latest in dieting trends; the Maple Syrup diet. Also known as the Lemon Detox diet, its praises have been sung over and over by celebrities like Beyonce Knowles, who lost over one and a half stones in a fortnight. This cleansing diet promises rapid weight loss, clearer skin and bags of new-found energy. Sounds perfect, right? Well, maybe not. Doctors on both sides of the Atlantic have warned against such crash dieting. Not only is the calorie content dangerously low (around 60 a day), but there are seriously few vitamins and minerals which is definitely not a good idea in the long-term. There are so many diets which force consumers to only eat a very limited number of foodstuffs, just think back to the Cabbage Soup days of the 1980s. Then came the Atkins and South Beach diet, both of which took our beloved carbohydrates off the menu.

For people who don't want to cut out certain types of food, there is an alternative on the market. Diet pills, often of the herbal variety, such as Alli, Reductamin, Slim-Kwik (the list is almost endless), promise to increase the metabolic rate and allow consumers to burn off calories in a more natural way. Once again, however, all is not necessarily as it seems. Experts warn of the many side effects, from high blood pressure and insomnia to headaches and even heart attacks. Despite their claims to be physically non-addictive, doctors have seen an increasing number of young women mentally addicted to diet pills and continue to warn of their danger.

Don't be disheartened though, it's not all doom and gloom in the world of dieting. Slimming clubs, such as WeightWatchers and Slimming World, offer a sensible and effective way to lose weight. There are none of the health risks associated with detox diets, crash diets or pills as these clubs offer consumers well-balanced menus and encourage them to take regular exercise. In addition, many people find it easier to lose weight, and keep it off, within a group scenario. For those of us with hectic schedules, the Internet has made it even easier to be part of a slimming community with a multitude of companies offering everything you need on-line.

So what have we learnt today? Well, let's face it, there's not much point being a size 10 goddess if all the pills you've popped have left you with crippling headaches. And who's going to take out somebody who only eats cabbage? Without a doubt, slimming clubs offer the most effective, sensible and safe way to lose weight. The only you'll need is the determination to keep it off!
