Types of Air Purifiers
How do you know which air purifier is the best when there are so many to choose? It really comes down to your needs and your budget. What might work well for one person may not be acceptable for another. A person who suffers from allergies may want a better air purifier than a person who does not suffer from allergies. When choosing an air purifier, take into account how many rooms will need the air cleaner or will you need to purify the entire house. There are air purifiers that can be installed to purify the entire home, which may require a major overall. However, it is important to note that the smaller units do a better job when cleaning the air. Budget is another factor to consider. The cost of a purifier ranges in price from the basic unit costing around $80 to the more sophisticated units that can be must more.
In the world of air purifiers there are passive, active, or a combination of both. When a purifier is passive, it cleans the air from the inside of a unit. It is simply a filter that traps particles when a fan draws the air towards it. This is usually the least expensive of the three purifiers mentioned. You may already be familiar with these filters as this is the type of filters used in many air-conditioning units. The HEPA filter is an example of a passive air purifier and appears to set the stand for other passive filters. The HEPA filter is regulated by the Department of Energy and must adhere to strict guidelines. Act with caution when choosing a filter that claims to be a HEPA-type or compares itself to HEPA as these products are not on the same level nor do they provide 99% filtration like HEPA.
Unlike the passive filter, which is inside the unit, an active air purifier cleans the air outside the unit. To understand how an active air purifier works you must first know something about the air that you breathe. In the air there are things called ions. It is normal to have both positive and negative ions in the air. The optimal result is to have a balance between the negative and positive ions. When the balance shifts, it can cause health problems. An active air purifier sends ions out from the purifier unit and ensures the correct amounts, both positive and negative, are present in the air.
A combination of a passive/active air purifier is one that cleans the air both from inside and outside the unit. This is a purifier equipped with the technology to do two jobs creating a much better breathing environment for everyone. A combination air purifier cannot only collect the standard, dust, pet dander, smoke, molds, and other pollutants. It also rids the air of unwanted particles and pollutants that may cause irritation in allergy and asthma suffers. It is not uncommon to see a HEPA air purifier used in conjunction with the passive/active unit. The cost of this type of passive/active air purifier is much more of an investment financially then the single unit purifiers.
